5 Tips to help dogs with arthritis

As your dog ages, things that were once second nature can become an effort – running becomes a stiff walk, and jumping on their favorite chair becomes impossible.

Arthritis comes from cartilage death and inflammation

Prolonged use from a full and active life can cause cartilage surfaces in joints to thin, and the cartilage cells to die.  The loss of cartilage in joints reduces, and in some cases eliminates the cushion between the bones at the joint, causing them to rub on one another and create pain.  Further creating discomfort, when cartilage cells die they release enzymes that cause inflammation of the joints, causing joint immobility and pain.  Fortunately, there are things you can do to help relieve your aging dog’s pain and discomfort.

  1. 1. Massage: Vigorous massage can help stimulate blood flow and relax stiffness.  Here are some dog massage tips.
  1. 2. Supplementation: Dietary supplements high in omega-3 fatty acids (like green-lipped mussel), glucosamine and chondroitin can help, as well as natural cannabinoids.
  1. 3. Exercise: Maintain mobility with reasonable exercise, based on your dog’s level of pain.
  1. 4. Acupuncture: This ancient Chinese remedy can help dogs regain their mobility.
  1. 5. Prescriptions: There are several pharmaceutical options to help relieve your dog’s pain and restore joint mobility as well.

It can be very hard to watch your best friend struggle with the things he used to love to do, thanks to pain and joint immobility from arthritis.  Fortunately though, these tips can help him regain some of himself – and in younger dogs, these tips can help prevent arthritis.  When in doubt, consult your veterinarian for their advice.
